Traveling Greengrocery (The Idols of Housewives)

The guy with a purple shirt in the above photo is one of the category many housewives are always waiting for. If, he doesn't come, many women will grumble in disappointment.

He is not a movie star, also not a celebrity. He and many of his colleagues are often not good looking and many times smelly.

However, whenever he, and his friends are off duty, probably, there will be no salad or soup on your dining table. Very important.

He is only a traveling greengrocery. Yes, traveling or mobile. In Western countries, greengroceries are stores or market but not in Indonesia. Since a long time ago, this mobile vegetable retailer aare already known. With their small two wheel wagon, he will visit house by house looking for housewives who have included vegetables on their menu for family lunch or dinner.

Usually, a traveling greengrocery choose a specific area which can be covered by walking. While crawling streets, he usually screams at a very loud voice a word "SAYUR or SAYUUUR" which means vegetables.

Until now, they still exist. Many still use the cart to bring various of vegetables on the top of the wagon. However, the clever ones invest on faster carrier or vehicle like motorcycles or cars that can broaden their market to farther area and possibility to get buyer faster.

What does housewives buy from those traveling greengroceries? Many. At least each peddler brings around 20-30 items in their wagon. It is not only vegetables they sell, it is not uncommon to find salted fish and even meat.

That is why many housewives will be waiting anxiously everyday for them to come. Those people ease their workloads because if the greengrocery doesn't come, then they must go to a market that most of housewives don't have much.
