What Is the Function of the LCD Display Inside Indonesia Commuter Train?

lcd display inside Indonesia Commuter Train

It is not a new thing in developed countries to have an LCD display inside commuter train. I saw similar thing in MTR in Hongkong or MRT in Singapore. However, in Indonesia, the installation of a digital display inside public transportation has just been started few years back.

The first public transportation to have such equipment is the commuter trains that serve in the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek). Some trains have been equipped by multi function LCD Display (I don't know the brand).

SOME, not all. There are still many without.

The LCD display has been used for different purposes. Of course, among them is as a place to allow the operator to get more income from advertisements. The KCJ (KAI Commuter Jabodetabek), the operator of Indonesia Commuter Train has been aggressively promoting their trains as mobile advertising tools for anyone who is willing to pay.

However, they also understood that the LCD Display can be used as a powerful tool to make their service more customer friendly. It is also useful to interact with their service users, the passengers.

Therefore, besides ads, there are many other things shown to the hanging LCD display.

Passengers can get many types of information from the schedule of praying times for moslems upto what movie will come in next month. The train users can also feel inspired because the display often shows quotes from famous persons or pholisophers. Not the least, knowledge from all over the world such as the existence about an island full of Pig that can swim (Pig Island), or that Black Widow spider female eats their male after mating.

The LCD Display is also one source of entertainment as it often acts as a music clip player, which is surely helpful to minimize the stress during rush hours. Even, passengers can also join a quiz.

Many roles have been played by that simple LCD Display.

For me, the display represent more than just that. It is the sign of the willingness of the operator to change. News spread worldwide about how poor and not user friendly Indonesia public transportation was but the display should show the determination of the operator to make their service become more user-friendly.
