Indonesia Horse Taxi - Delman or Sado


Almost definitely, you may not find this old transportation in Jakarta , the capital of Indonesia, except when there is a special event or ceremony held. It is safe to say, the horse taxi extinct in the city. However, whenever you travel to smaller and less metropolis cities, this horse carts still do its function to transport people from one place to another.

Indonesians call it as "Delman" referring to the Dutch engineer who invented the vehicle more than 100 years ago. Other cities may have their own name for the same horse taxi, Sado, Bendi, and many other names for the same cart tugged by a horse.


The numbers are also getting less and less, year by year. It's not only because being a coachman is not a promising life, but also because many cities have started to limit and intentionally reduce their numbers. The usage of horse seems to cause also hygiene issue as horse often throw away faces while they are crawling streets.

In some cities, the existence of horse taxi are more considered to provide visitors a unique taste of an old style living than purely a public transportation.
